The article explores the value orientations of economics students as preconditions for the development of student agency in foreign language training. The relevance of the study is determined by the growing need to prepare competitive professionals capable of autonomous learning, self-regulation, responsible decision-making, and continuous professional development within the framework of student-centered higher education. The study aims to identify the dominant terminal and instrumental value orientations of economics students and determine their potential as value-based preconditions for the development of student agency in foreign language training. The theoretical framework is based on M. Rokeach’s theory of human values and contemporary approaches to understanding professional agency. The empirical study was conducted using M. Rokeach’s Value Survey. The research sample comprised 280 economics students. Mean rank scores were calculated to establish the hierarchy of terminal and instrumental values, followed by their thematic grouping and interpretation in the context of student agency development. The findings indicate that health, love, financial security, and an interesting job are the most highly ranked terminal values, whereas responsibility, independence, rationality, and self-control occupy the leading positions among instrumental values. The analysis identified several groups of value orientations associated with professional self-realization, autonomy, self-development, and personal well-being, which may serve as key preconditions for fostering student agency in foreign language training. The study demonstrates that these value orientations constitute an important internal resource for developing students’ autonomy, self-regulation, goalsetting, and active participation in the educational process. The findings may be used to design didactic conditions that promote student agency and enhance the effectiveness of foreign language training for future economists.
