Purpose – to study the professional activities of Nikolai Vitenberger, a former head of the surgical department of the Mukachevo Central District Hospital, teacher of the next generation of surgeons.
Materials: memories of contemporaries, documents of personal affairs and family archive.
Methods: historical, synthetic and structural-logical analysis.
Results. The article highlights bright pages of life and activity of the outstanding physician, one of the elders of the Transcarpathian surgery, the organizer of the surgical service in Mukachevo – Nikolai Georgievich Vitenberger (1909–1997). The publication is dated one hundred and tenth anniversary from the date of his birth.
Conclusions. Nikolai Vitenberger is a man who created a surgical service in Mukachevo, a person who was a reformer-seeker, a risky person, but at the same time responsible, talented and educated, who boldly took the first steps in the new areas of surgery for that time. It is a truly outstanding personality of the last century, which will be remembered in Transcarpathia for another decade.
