THE FORMATION OF PATRIOTIC COMPETENCE IN A FUTURE TEACHER OF THE NEW UKRAINIAN SCHOOL (THEORETICAL ASPECT)

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the process of forming patriotic competence in future teachers of the New Ukrainian School (NUS), that is particularly relevant in the context of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war. The author emphasizes the urgent need to educate a young generation that shares national and patriotic values, the ideals of freedom, independence, and responsibility for the fate of the country. In this context, patriotism is considered a holistic personal quality that includes not only love for the Motherland, but also a deep knowledge of the language, culture, history, state symbols, as well as readiness for civic engagement and an active life position.The focus of the study is on the development of patriotic competence as one of the key professional qualities of NUS teachers, which enables them to effectively transmit knowledge and values to students, fostering national identity, civic consciousness, and respect for cultural heritage. The author analyzes various scholarly approaches to defining patriotism and its components, including cognitive, emotional-motivational, activity-based, multicultural, reflective, and ethno-identificational dimensions.The article explores pedagogical foundations and practical tools for developing patriotic competence among students of pedagogical institutions of higher education. Special attention is paid to the role of project-based learning, student self-government, mentoring, and the creation of cultural and educational spaces that promote leadership skills, initiative, critical thinking, and a responsible attitude toward social processes.It is emphasized that effective patriotic education is only possible through the cooperation of families, educational institutions, public organizations, and local authorities. The importance of creating an integrated system of national education aimed at training highly qualified teachers – conscious citizens who will become agents of change in education and society – is highlighted.Thus, patriotic competence is viewed as a strategically important component of the professional development of future educators within the New Ukrainian School. Its formation should be comprehensive – through the combination of theoretical knowledge, emotional and value-based attitudes toward the Motherland, and practical experience in public life.
