The article considers gymnastics as one of the leading means of comprehensive physical development of the individual, as well as of forming movement culture, coordination abilities, and functional fitness of student youth. Gymnastic exercises are characterized by the performance of complex, well-organized motor actions that require a high level of precision, coordination, rhythmicity, and conscious control of movements. Therefore, the process of teaching gymnastics requires a scientifically substantiated approach based on consideration of the patterns of functioning of the musculoskeletal system and the mechanical characteristics of human motor activity. It has been proven that the use of biomechanical knowledge in the pedagogical process contributes to a more conscious mastery of gymnastic exercises, improvement of spatial–temporal orientation, rationalization of movement technique, and an increase in the overall level of motor preparedness of learners. The application of the biomechanical approach makes it possible to optimize the educational process, increase its effectiveness, and reduce the risk of errors during exercise performance. Of particular relevance is the biomechanical approach at the initial stages of gymnastics training, when basic motor skills are established, correct coordination structures are formed, and an individual style of performing gymnastic exercises develops.
