Abstract

The postoperative period in the maxillofacial region is often accompanied by pain, swelling, and functional discomfort. Platelet concentrates are used in oral surgery to optimize wound healing and prevent postoperative complications. Objective. To systematize evidence from the scientific literature and meta-analyses regarding the effects of different types of platelet concentrates on postoperative wound healing in the maxillofacial region. Materials and Methods. An analytical literature review was conducted for the period 2021–2026 using the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. Prospective and retrospective clinical studies, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), systematic reviews, and meta-analyses were included in the analysis. Results. The use of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) following tooth extraction may contribute to improved early soft-tissue healing, reduced postoperative pain, swelling, and trismus, as well as a lower risk of alveolar osteitis. The most convincing evidence concerns the effect of platelet concentrates on early clinical outcomes during the postoperative period. Their effect on bone regeneration remains inconclusive, which may be attributed to differences in concentrate preparation and application protocols, patient characteristics, and outcome assessment criteria. Platelet concentrates may serve as an adjunctive approach to optimizing wound healing and preventing postoperative complications, particularly following complex tooth extractions. However, the available evidence is characterized by considerable clinical and methodological heterogeneity, highlighting the need for further standardized randomized controlled trials. Conclusions. PRP and PRF are promising autologous biomaterials for optimizing the postoperative period and promoting reparative processes in oral surgery
